Stop Over　寄り道

I am on my way to my other home, Maine. Memory from last winter and all the forecasts on the recent northeast US weather dreaded me to go back.......
I have been stopping over at where two of my kids live prior to my final destination. It's sunny California where I soak up all the sun while I can. これからもう１つの故郷メイン州に４ヶ月ぶりに帰ろうとしている。去年の厳しい冬の記憶とアメリカの北東部の天候の近状を聞くとなんとなく怖じ気づく。最近の帰郷ルートは２人の子供が住んでいるカリフォルニア州サンディエゴに寄り道する事になっている。ここで出来るだけ太陽に当たって帰ろう。

Found a cute French style cafe. Great cafe au lait. 海岸通りに可愛いフレンチカフェを見つけた。美味しいカフェオレで一息。

Request from my son and his girlfriend. My famous French onion soup. It's great on a bit chilly day.
息子からのリクエストでオニオングラタンスープを作った。普段こんな暖かいところでもちょっと肌寒い夜には最高。

Glowing Autumn 燃える秋

The word "autumn" in Chinese character（秋） is made of two small characters, plants and fire. You can imagine why. The trees and bushes are burning and glowing everywhere. It's a different kind of foliage from Maine though equally beautiful. 秋という漢字は禾と火の二つの漢字から出来ていてよく考えたものだと思う。家の外へ出れば木々や実が赤や黄金に色づき思わず燃えている様に見える。メインの紅葉を思い出す。色づき方は少し違うけど美しさは変わらない。メインの秋が恋しい。。。。

Autumn is alive and glowing at every corner. 秋はどんな小さな所でもひっそりと鮮やかに燃えている。

Mountain of my dream 夢に見た懐かしの山

Exactly 46 years ago, I was at this mountain resort call Kamikouchi (north of Nagano) with my family where we accidentally camped out in the back yard (huge) of this gorgeous Imperial Hotel. When the hotel staffs found us next morning in the rain, they asked us if we were alright and wanted to help us. I was almost shocked by their kind manner and generosity instead of shooing us out of their property. I decided then, that some day I will be back to stay at this beautiful hotel. And the day came this fall to celebrate our 35th marriage anniversary.

ちょうど４６年ほど前、家族と上高地へキャンプに行き間違って帝国ホテルの裏庭辺りにテントを張ってしまった恥ずかしい思い出がある。あの日着いた時間はもう真っ暗闇でその上雨がしとしと降っていて手っ取り早くテントを張ったのが実はこの高級ホテルの裏庭あたりだった。翌朝雨の中で私達を見つけたホテルの従業員は怒って追い出すどころかとても優しく気遣い応対しくれた。彼らのあまりの紳士ぶりに感激し何時の日か絶対にこのホテルに泊まる！と決めたものだ。そしてこの秋、結婚３５周年記念に４６年ぶりにその願いは果たせた。

This is what I envisioned 46 years ago (12 years old at the time). 

このホテルの食事風景は４６年前（当時１２歳）の想像通りだった。

焼岳を見下ろし梓川のほとりを歩く。昔と全然変わらない風景。

Dreaming of coming back here again. Hopefully in sooner than 46 years.....

済んだ空気に身も心も洗われた３日間。又近い日に訪れる事を願って。。

Good 'ol things 昔ながらの優れ物

I recently found this soap at a local hardware store. It's called botchan (little boy) soap. I bought it just because I loved the cute picture and it's packaging. 最近ホームセンターで見つけた石けん。可愛い絵と包装が気に入ってつい買ってしまった。

 I used it for my bath at night and quickly fell in love with it. It makes rich and creamy lather and helps with my sensitive and dry skin. I went on their company website and found out that it's an old company that's been making just soaps for nearly a century with traditional way using simple ingredients (animal fat and palm oil). It can be used for anything from dish washing to shampooing hair. This is one of the best soaps I've used so far. 早速その晩のお風呂に使ってみたら泡立ちが凄く良く風呂上がりの肌もしっとりしていて即気に入ってしまった。最近乾燥気味の肌も心なしかしっとりしてていい感じ。ホームページを見ると大正時代から続く石けん一筋の会社らしい。使っている材料も全部天然素材で牛脂とやし油だけ。用途は食器洗いから洗髪までオールマイテぃらしい。今まで色々石けんを試して来たけどこの石けんはかなり気に入っている。暫くはまりそうだ。

I found this retro looking bottle at a drug store in Amagasaki market. The pink fluid is alcohol based facial lotion which is way too strong for my skin. I just leave it on my dresser to look at. I love it's kitschiness. これは尼崎の商店街にある薬屋さんで埃をかぶった棚の上に陳列してあった資生堂オイデルミン。レトロな瓶とキッチュな雰囲気が気に入って即購入。中身はアルコールがかなりきついアストリンゼントで実際に使うのは無理。ドレッサーの上に何時までも座っている。

Found this collection of old signs on the wall of a bar in Yamagata. Just nostalgic. 山形の居酒屋の壁に飾ってあった古い看板。昭和の匂いがぷんぷん。懐かしい〜

Back to work 仕事

Finally back to work. Well, meaning making my own clothes.  Pencil skirt made from vintage curtain and linen pull-on blouse. 仕事、と言っても自分の洋服作り。ビンテージのカーテンで作ったタイトスカートと麻の簡単ブラウス。

Below: Two of my recent impulse buys. Linen dress and dress patterns. I swore that I wasn't going to buy anymore clothes in August but that commitment quickly diapperaed when I saw this dress and its price tag(1/2 price).  I fell in love with the dress patterns I found on Merchant & Mills website. 最近の衝動買い。今月はもう洋服は買わない！とあれだけ誓った筈がこのワンピースとその値段（セール！）を見た途端決心はあっけなく砕けた。。。。下の洋服の型紙はあるイギリスのオンラインショップで見つけた物。型紙にしては高かったけどこれは絶対に欲くてパス出来なかった。

Love the detail on the sleeves. 袖のデザインが中々良い。

In Yamagata (cont'd) 山形にて（続き）

Those scenes in the country side brings me back to the childhood. I remember seeing farm houses  everywhere in the suburbs.  Old farmer stopped to give me fresh tomatoes and corns while I took a morning walk. Happy to see such generosity still exists in country side.  Priceless moment........
以前訪れた事のある様な懐かしい場所。こんなのどかな風景は一昔前まで都会をちょっと離れると何処にでもあった。朝道を散歩していると農家のおばちゃんが取れたてのトマトと昨夜湯がいたというトウモロコシをくれた。ほれ、おやつに食べな！って。こんな親切がまだ田舎には残っていると思うと嬉しくなった。

Homemade buckwheat noodle was part of a course dinner at an inn.

In Yamagata 山形にて

Short trip to Yamagata (North East Japan). Little over 2 hours can bring you to a beautiful country side and let you escape from realities. 母と山形への旅。東京から山形新幹線で２時間ちょっとで陸奥の国へ。都会の喧嘩から離れ美味しい食べ物、お酒、地元の人々とのふれ合いに癒される。

Huge rock oyster in Sakata. It was the best oyster I ever had.

今が旬の岩牡蠣。酒田の魚市場で生の牡蠣にポン酢をかけて出してくれるお店。

こんな大きくて食べごたえのある牡蠣は初めて。忘れられない味だ。

Thriving Greens

Japan is full of greens. Greens everywhere thriving in the humid and rainy climates. 日本はみずみずしい。夏は蒸し暑いと言えばそうだけどこの湿気が植物をこれだけ生き生きさせているんだなぁ、と妙になっとく。雨の日、道のすみにひっそりと生きている緑の植物に魅せられる。
